Robert Ballo, Producer & Director of Photography
Robert Ballo is an image-maker and storyteller. He has established an environment at Shadowland where interesting scripts can be developed and made into even more interesting movies. His role is guiding the company technically and creatively in making these movies as well as ensuring the financial success of the company for both its investors and its employees.
Robert has been working as a Producer and Director of Photography for over 25 years. A cinematographer whose film and HD feature credits include: Locked Away (2010), Accused at 17 (2009), Spectres (2004), Runnin’ at Midnite (2001), The Affair (2000) and Starving Artists (1997). Robert has traveled around the world on many documentary productions. His television credits for national broadcast and cable networks include College Sports In America (PBS), Great European Balloon Adventure (2000), Dirty Harry The Original (2001), The Great Year (2004), and The Rose Parade – Pageant For The Ages (2004). Through his digital motion picture company GOAL Productions, Ballo has shot and produced many DVD bonus feature programs for films such as Million Dollar Baby (2004), Blind Horizon (2005), and Today You Die (2005) and Jackie Chan’s The Myth (2007), The Rose Parade (RFD-TV 2011) .
GOAL has collaborated with major international partners as well. In addition to supervising creation of the North American version of Jackie Chan’s The Myth, in 1991, the company produced College Sports in America in High Definition Television for NHK, Japan Broadcast Corporation. It was one of the first HDTV documentaries to be produced in America. GOAL was also a significant contributor to the 13-part series The Vietnam Project (BBC), providing domestic production services on the West Coast to the European producers.
The company has produced over 100 behind-the-scenes documentaries for features released on DVD. Less than 24 hours after the 2004 Academy Awards, the company was in production on a 3-camera high definition shoot of a round table discussion about Million Dollar Baby with Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, Hilary Swank and James Lipton, host of Bravo Channel’s Inside the Actors Studio. The featurette was included on the DVD release of the year’s Best Picture. GOAL’s work can also be seen in the 10th anniversary DVD special for Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven and a 30th anniversary DVD special about Dirty Harry that was also broadcast on the Encore cable network as a one-hour television special.
Robert Ballo filmmaking and management experience includes featured segments for dozens of popular national programs, including Good Morning America, Leeza, Sci-Fi Buzz, Hollywood’s Greatest Stunts, Caryl & Marilyn, Movie Magic, Running and Racing World, How’d They Do That? and many more.
Ballo is a member of the Academy of Television Arts and Science and has been a part of the professional faculty USC’s School of Cinematic teaching cinematography since 1990.
